MOVING FROM USA TO CANADA

Moving to Canada

Cross-Border Moving by LTL Freight & Dedicated Truck

Complete guide to moving household goods and personal effects from the U.S. to Canada, including customs, documents, access planning, and delivery options.

Moving from the U.S. to Canada

Moving to Canada is different from overseas international shipping. Since Canada moves are cross-border moves, shipments are handled by truck rather than ocean freight.

East Coast Shipping offers Canada moving services using LTL palletized freight for smaller shipments and dedicated truck service for larger, more time-sensitive, or higher-value moves.

We can assist with moves to Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Ottawa, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Halifax, and many other Canadian destinations.

Important: Canada Moves Are Not Ocean Container Moves

We do not ship household goods to Canada by ocean container. Canada shipments are handled by cross-border trucking, either as palletized LTL freight or by direct dedicated truck depending on the shipment size, timing, and service needs.

Shipping Options to Canada

LTL Palletized Freight

Best for smaller shipments, boxes, and partial moves.

  • Goods are packed, palletized, and shipped by freight carrier
  • Cost-effective for small to medium shipments
  • Best when shipment is properly packed and secured
  • More handling than dedicated truck service

Dedicated Truck Service

Best for larger, more time-sensitive, or higher-value moves.

  • Direct truck service from origin to destination
  • Less handling than LTL freight
  • Faster and more controlled delivery process
  • Recommended for full household moves or fragile shipments

Which Canada Moving Service Is Right for You?

  • Small shipment: LTL palletized freight is usually the most cost-effective option.
  • Medium shipment: We can compare LTL freight versus partial or direct truck options.
  • Large or time-sensitive move: Dedicated truck service is typically recommended.
  • Fragile or high-value goods: Dedicated truck may reduce handling and improve control.

Canada Customs – What to Expect

Canada Border Services Agency allows qualifying used household goods and personal effects to enter duty-free when you are moving or returning to Canada and meet the applicable requirements. Goods should be personally owned, used, and intended for your own household use.

Most customers moving to Canada will need to prepare a BSF186 / B4 Personal Effects Accounting Document, including goods accompanying and goods to follow. CBSA also notes that if items are sold or disposed of within 12 months of importation, duties may become payable. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

  • Prepare a clear inventory list before the shipment moves
  • Separate goods accompanying from goods to follow where applicable
  • Use clear descriptions and reasonable values
  • Keep copies of all customs forms and shipping documents
  • Do not include prohibited or restricted items without reviewing rules first

Documents Commonly Required

  • Passport copy
  • Visa, work permit, study permit, PR card, or residency support documents if applicable
  • Detailed inventory list
  • BSF186 / B4 form where applicable
  • Canadian destination address and contact details
  • Proof of residence or relocation details if requested
  • Vehicle documents if shipping a car or motorcycle
  • Any extra documents requested by CBSA or the carrier

Vehicle Shipping to Canada

Vehicles moving from the U.S. to Canada must comply with Canadian import requirements, including Transport Canada and Registrar of Imported Vehicles requirements where applicable.

  • Original title or ownership documents are typically required
  • Vehicle admissibility should be confirmed before shipping
  • RIV requirements may apply
  • Modifications may be needed after import
  • Duties or taxes may apply depending on vehicle origin and import status

Additional Costs to Expect

Standard customs clearance is included with our Canada moving services. Additional charges may apply depending on access, building requirements, timing, or special handling needs.

  • Stair carry if there are multiple flights of stairs
  • Elevator reservation, building move-in fees, or certificate of insurance requirements
  • Shuttle service if a large truck cannot access the residence
  • Long carry from truck parking to the home, apartment, or storage unit
  • Storage if delivery cannot be completed as scheduled
  • Special handling for pianos, safes, oversized items, bulky furniture, or fragile items
  • Duties or taxes if goods do not qualify as used personal effects
