If you are moving to the UK from the USA, it is important to work with an experienced international mover that understands customs procedures, destination delivery logistics, and the best shipping method for your shipment size and timeline.

East Coast Shipping offers service for small shipments, shared containers, full containers, and vehicle shipping to the UK. We help customers moving to London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Cardiff, Belfast, and many other destinations throughout the UK.

Shipping Options to the UK

Less Container Load (LCL)

Best for smaller shipments that do not require a full container.

  • Good option for modest shipment sizes
  • Weekly or regular departures on many lanes
  • Can have higher destination handling charges than larger shipments

Shared Container / Groupage

Cost-effective for customers who are flexible on timing.

  • Consolidated with other household goods shipments
  • Can offer strong value compared with direct LCL
  • Transit depends on consolidation schedule and route

Full Container Load (FCL)

Recommended for larger moves or customers who want exclusive use of the container.

  • 20ft and 40ft container options
  • Less handling and added protection for larger moves
  • Often best for high-volume household goods shipments

Transfer of Residence (ToR) Relief

Many customers moving their normal residence to the UK may qualify for Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief, which can help avoid customs duty and tax on qualifying personal belongings. The UK government advises completing the ToR application when moving your personal belongings from outside the UK to Great Britain. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

For qualifying household goods moved under ToR, HMRC has also allowed simplified commodity code treatment for personal effects, which helps streamline declarations for movers and customs agents. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}

Typical ToR points:
  • You are moving your normal residence to the UK
  • The goods are for your personal use
  • The goods are not commercial goods
  • You complete the ToR process where applicable

Restricted & Prohibited Goods

Some items need special review before shipping to the UK. UK government guidance notes that firearms, explosives, and ammunition are restricted, and some food, plant, and animal products are also controlled. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}

  • Firearms, ammunition, and explosive-related items
  • Some meat, dairy, fish, animal products, seeds, nuts, fruit, and vegetables
  • Items that may require CITES permits
  • Certain medicines or specialist regulated goods

Customs Guidance

Personal belongings moved as part of a relocation are different from ordinary travel allowances. The correct customs treatment depends on your status, your goods, and whether you qualify for ToR relief. UK government guidance explains that personal goods can also be declared under different methods depending on circumstances. :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4}

We recommend using a detailed inventory and reviewing restricted items before packing to avoid surprises on arrival.

Vehicle & Motorcycle Shipping to the UK

Cars and motorcycles can be shipped to the UK separately or, in some cases, in connection with a household goods move. Final import treatment depends on the type of vehicle, its value, the importer’s status, and local registration and compliance rules.

If you are shipping a vehicle together with your move, we can help review the best routing and whether a dedicated container or another service option makes the most sense.

Typical Documents Required

  • Passport copy
  • Inventory in English
  • Bill of Lading or shipping documents
  • UK address and contact details
  • ToR reference or approval where applicable
  • Visa or residency support documents if relevant
  • Vehicle documents if shipping a car or motorcycle
  • Any extra documents requested by customs or destination agents

Transfer of Residence relief remains important for people relocating to the UK

HMRC continues to direct people moving their personal belongings to the UK to use the Transfer of Residence process where applicable, and the government’s customs rules still support simplified commodity code treatment for qualifying household goods. This remains one of the most important customs steps for many international moves to Great Britain. :contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5}

UK import controls still require care with restricted personal items

UK government guidance continues to highlight restrictions on firearms, explosives, some food and plant products, and other controlled items. This is especially important for international movers packing food, seeds, animal products, or goods that may fall under permit or wildlife-related controls. :contentReference[oaicite:6]{index=6}

Busy UK gateway activity may still affect routing and delivery timing

UK port activity has remained active, with DP World reporting record container volumes at London Gateway in 2025 and ongoing expansion work tied to future capacity. Higher throughput can be positive long term, but it can also mean customers should allow flexibility around vessel schedules, port handling, and inland delivery timing. :contentReference[oaicite:7]{index=7}
