 Customs Information for Household Goods

Switzerland has specific requirements for duty-free entry of household goods:

  • Duty-Free Entry: Household goods can be imported tax-free if:

    • They have been used for at least 6 months prior to import.

    • They are for continued personal use in Switzerland.

  • Required Documents:

    • Detailed inventory (English, French, German, or Italian)

    • Copy of passport

    • Swiss residence or work permit (or application confirmation)

    • Swiss Customs Form 18.44 (Application for Duty-Free Clearance of Household Effects)

  • Timeline: Goods must generally arrive within 6 months of the owner’s arrival in Switzerland.

 Shipping Cars to Switzerland

If you’re planning to bring your vehicle:

  • Duty-Free Import: Allowed if the car has been owned and used for at least 6 months before your move.

  • Documents Needed:

    • Title/registration & proof of ownership

    • Swiss residence/work permit

    • Insurance confirmation

  • Compliance: Vehicles must meet Swiss technical and environmental standards. After import, you must register the car with local traffic authorities within 12 months.

 Prohibited & Restricted Items

Switzerland has strict import controls. Items to avoid include:

  • Firearms and ammunition (require permits)

  • Hazardous materials (explosives, flammable liquids, corrosives)

  • Counterfeit goods, pirated media, and banned electronics

  • Plants, seeds, and soil without permits (to protect agriculture)

  • Large quantities of alcohol and tobacco (heavily taxed; small allowances only)

 Tips for Moving to Switzerland

  • Label all boxes with inventory numbers for faster customs clearance.

  • Set aside essentials in carry-on luggage — it may take a few weeks for your shipment to arrive.

  • Be prepared for port fees, customs exams, and delivery access charges (e.g., parking permits, long carry, stair carries) depending on your Swiss address.

  • Consider insurance:

    • Total Loss Only (PBO) – for owner-packed goods.

    • Full Coverage – available if our professional crew packs your shipment.
