A One-Stop Guide for Moving to Germany

Germany is one of our most important European destinations, and it is also one of the destinations where strong preparation makes a big difference. Customs rules, inventory descriptions, residence registration, and delivery access planning can all affect cost, timing, and how smoothly your move goes.

East Coast Shipping offers service for small shipments, shared containers, full containers, and selected vehicle shipments to Germany, with guidance on customs documents, destination handling, and practical delivery planning.

Germany Customs Basics for Household Goods

Used household goods and personal effects can often be imported duty and tax free when moving your residence to Germany, but the shipment must meet customs requirements.

  • Goods should generally be owned and used for at least 6 months before shipment
  • Goods should generally be imported within 12 months of the actual move or first residence registration in Germany
  • Goods must be for personal use
  • Goods should not be sold within 12 months after customs clearance
  • Missing documents can delay clearance and may create large customs bond issues

Shipping Options to Germany

Less Container Load (LCL)

Best for smaller shipments that do not require a full container.

  • Good option for modest shipment sizes
  • Often routed through Bremen / Bremerhaven handling chain
  • Destination handling and CFS-related costs apply

Shared Container / Groupage

A cost-effective option for customers who are flexible on timing.

  • Consolidated with other household goods shipments
  • Can offer strong value versus exclusive container use
  • Transit depends on consolidation schedule and route

Full Container Load (FCL)

Recommended for larger moves or customers who want exclusive use of the container.

  • 20ft and 40ft container options
  • Less handling and added protection for larger moves
  • Often best for higher-volume household goods shipments

Documents Commonly Required

  • Bill of Lading or Air Waybill
  • Detailed packing list in English or German
  • Passport copy
  • German residence registration certificate (Anmeldebestätigung)
  • Flight ticket copy showing entry into Germany
  • Proof of residence abroad
  • Employer, embassy, university, pension, or self-employment support documents depending on case
  • Vehicle documents if a car or motorcycle is included
  • Any extra forms or support papers requested by customs
Important packing list note: Germany customs and destination agents do not like vague inventory descriptions. Avoid descriptions like “misc,” “PBO,” “garage items,” “basement items,” “attic stuff,” or unclear carton wording.

Different Germany Customs Situations

German / EU Citizens

May need employer letters, tax returns, lease records, or other proof showing actual residence abroad for the last 12 months.

Non-EU Citizens

Often need visa or visa application copy, plus employer or other residence support documents showing the move to Germany.

Students / Retirees

May need school letters, pension approval paperwork, tax records, and other evidence depending on their case.

Returning Goods / Inheritance

Special rules can apply to inherited goods, returning goods, military / SOFA cases, or gifts, and these often need extra documents.

Fun Facts About Germany

Germany has over 20,000 castles

From fairy-tale style hilltop castles to historic fortresses, Germany has one of the richest castle landscapes in Europe.

Berlin has more bridges than Venice

Berlin is famous for its waterways and bridge network, making it one of Europe’s most interesting capital cities for urban exploration.

The Autobahn is world famous

Some stretches of the Autobahn still have no general speed limit, though traffic rules and local restrictions remain very important.

Germany is great for regional variety

Life in Bavaria feels very different from life in Berlin, Hamburg, or the Rhine region, which makes moving to Germany exciting for many expats.

Helpful Tips for Moving to Germany

Get Documents Ready Early

Germany is document-heavy. Missing one important customs document can delay clearance and add costs.

Use Clear Inventories

Avoid wording like misc, PBO, attic stuff, garage items, bottles, jars, or unclear wood descriptions.

Plan Access at Delivery

Check for parking permits, long carry, stairs, narrow roads, low bridges, and whether a truck or chassis can access the address.

Prefer the Right Port

For many Germany shipments, Bremerhaven for containers and Bremen for LCL are often easier than Hamburg, which can be more expensive and document-heavy.

Bremerhaven terminal modernization is a major long-term positive

Large investment plans at Bremerhaven should help strengthen Germany’s import gateway capacity over time and support long-term cargo flow improvements.

North Europe congestion still matters for Germany-bound shipments

Congestion, inland transport pressure, and terminal bottlenecks across North Europe can still affect sailing schedules, cargo availability, and final delivery timing into Germany.

Customs paperwork remains one of the biggest causes of avoidable delays

In practice, incomplete customs files, vague inventories, and late residence paperwork remain some of the biggest causes of avoidable delay and extra cost on Germany moves.

U.S. Military Shipments to Germany Under NATO / SOFA Status

We receive many questions about shipments moving to Germany under NATO / SOFA status. These shipments follow a different customs process than standard household goods imported as used personal effects.

For U.S. military cargo under SOFA status, customs clearance is generally not completed directly at the port. Instead, the shipment normally moves under customs bond to the appropriate local customs office, where the service member must usually appear in person for clearance.

Typical SOFA Customs Forms

  • AE Form 550-175A for household goods
  • AE Form 190-1AA for vehicles

These forms are generally obtained by the customer from their Base, Military Police, or transportation officer in Germany.

How the Process Usually Works

  • Customer provides a copy of the Bill of Lading and packing list to obtain the required SOFA forms
  • Shipment moves under customs bond after arrival
  • Customer normally clears the shipment in person at the assigned customs office
  • Port clearance under standard household goods process usually does not apply

Important Notes for SOFA Shipments

  • SOFA shipments should not be treated the same as regular duty-free household goods imports
  • Extra coordination is often needed before arrival
  • Truck waiting time at customs may be limited, and extra charges can apply if customs takes longer
  • If your shipment includes a vehicle, please let us review the file in advance
  • Advance notice and complete paperwork are very important to avoid delays and added charges
Recommendation: If you are shipping to Germany under NATO / SOFA status, please contact us before booking so we can review the shipment details, documents, and destination customs process in advance.
