International Moving FAQ, Insurance & Shipping Rules
Everything you need to know before your international move — from customs paperwork and inventory requirements to insurance
options, payment terms, prohibited items, and transit times.
Before You Ship
These are the most important rules to review before pickup. A little preparation now can help prevent customs delays, added fees, and insurance issues later.
Customs Rules & Documentation
We provide destination-specific customs guidance and document requirements with your booking confirmation. Because import rules can change, we also recommend verifying
the latest details with your destination country’s consulate or customs authority.
Our team will guide you through the process step by step so you know what is needed before your shipment departs.
Inventory Requirements
Your inventory is one of the most important documents for customs clearance.
Full Packing
Service:
Our movers prepare a detailed customs inventory during the packing process.
Self-Packed Moves:
You must provide a numbered inventory with clear descriptions and estimated values.
Example:
#1 – Books ($300)
#2 – Linens ($250)
#3 – Dresser ($600)
Avoid generic descriptions such as “miscellaneous.” Boxes without clear descriptions may be rejected by customs. We include an inventory template with your booking confirmation.
Prohibited & Restricted Items
Most countries restrict or prohibit certain items. Common examples include:
- Perishable food
- Plants and seeds
- Certain medications
- Fireworks, ammunition, and weapons without proper permits
- Gasoline, lighter fluid, propane tanks
- Cleaning chemicals, bleach, and aerosol cans
Not sure about an item? Ask us before packing. It is much easier to check in advance than to deal with fines, delays, or confiscated goods
later.
Shipping Batteries & Powered Equipment
Lithium batteries are heavily regulated in ocean freight. Please tell us in advance if you are shipping scooters, e-bikes, power tools, lawn equipment, or any
battery-powered item.
Typically Allowed:
Internal batteries under 100Wh such as phones, laptops, and cameras, when declared and securely packed.
May Require Special
Handling:
Items over 100Wh such as e-scooters, e-bikes, hoverboards, and some tools may require HAZMAT declaration, surcharges, certified trucking, placards, and advance
approval.
Not Allowed:
Loose spare lithium batteries, damaged or leaking batteries, and undeclared high-capacity batteries.
Undeclared hazardous items can lead to major fines, refusal of shipment, customs problems, and possible loss of insurance coverage.
Insurance & Protection
Choosing the right coverage before pickup is one of the most important parts of protecting your shipment.
