Do I need insurance?

Most international shipments move through multiple handling points, terminals, trucks, and ocean transit. Insurance is strongly recommended for full household moves, higher-value furniture, artwork, vehicles, and long-distance overseas shipments.

Declared value guidance

Insurance is based on replacement value, not original purchase price. For household goods, a valued inventory may be needed for full coverage. For vehicles, use the replacement value of the automobile.

Helpful example

A declared value of $50,000 at 3.0% would estimate at approximately $1,500. This helps customers quickly understand how pricing works before booking.

Coverage Options

Keep the difference between policies clear and easy to understand. This is often the biggest point of confusion for customers.

Full Coverage

  • For professionally packed shipments
  • Broader protection for qualifying loss or damage
  • Options at 3.5% or 3.0% of declared value
  • Requires insurance to be arranged before pickup

Total Loss Only

  • For self-packed shipments
  • Catastrophic loss only
  • 2.0% of declared value
  • $5,000 minimum declared value

Important Insurance Notes

Before booking

  • Insurance must be arranged before pickup
  • Coverage cannot be added after export begins
  • High-value items should be declared in advance
  • Special crating may be recommended for fragile or valuable pieces

Common limitations

  • Owner-packed box damage is typically not covered under total loss only
  • Pre-existing damage is generally excluded
  • Normal wear and tear is not insurance damage
  • Mechanical or electrical failure without external damage may not be covered
